What does Madrid need to be League champion?: what
With their epic comeback against Sevilla, Real Madrid took another giant step towards winning the League title, the thirty-fifth in its history.
However, nothing is mathematical yet and, despite the cushion that Ancelotti's men enjoy -15 points above the next three classified-, there are six games at stake (one more for Barça, second in the table) and it can happen of everything, but there is no doubt that the leader has a chance to sing the alirón before the end of the championship.
For Madrid to be mathematically champion, it is enough for them to add three wins and a draw, 10 points, in a scenario in which Barça wins everything they have left: their current point difference is 15, which could become 9 at the end of this week if the azulgrana beat Cádiz this Monday and Rayo in their postponed match, in addition to the visit to Anoeta during the week.
In other words, the whites will be champions no matter what Xavi's team does if they secure those 10 points, a circumstance that may change if the Barça team punctures in any of their next commitments, which would accelerate the white wing if they don't fail.
- What remains for Madrid until the end of the League
Ancelotti's team has a complicated schedule between now and the end of the competition on the weekend of May 22, in just over a month.
In the week-to-week match that starts this Tuesday, Madrid will face Osasuna at Sadar. Later, after the break due to the Cup final, they will host Espanyol on matchday 34.
After that game, one of the most demanding will come, the visit to the Wanda Metropolitano to face Atlético in the derby. A day in which the white team can be proclaimed champion against the neighboring rival if Barça punctures any of its previous commitments.
Finally, they would have Levante at home, Cádiz away and Betis at home on matchday 38 where, if Madrid's rhythm doesn't change, it is very possible that they will already be champions.
What remains for Barça
The maximum persecutor of the leader, FC Barcelona, has one more game to play, the one postponed against Rayo on matchday 21 that is played this coming Sunday, which will equalize the number of games.
Earlier, on Monday night and to close matchday 32, Xavi's side hosted Cádiz at the Camp Nou. If they achieve victory in two games, the points difference with Madrid would be reduced from 15 to 9.
To conclude, Barça has Mallorca, Celta and Villarreal at home and Real Sociedad, Betis and Getafe away. A final calendar, a priori, affordable that allows the Catalans to continue dreaming of turning the tables.
However, Madrid has reached the final stretch of the season full of morale due to the recent epic nights they have experienced, and the League title seems to have a clear owner.
Impressive comeback by Real Madrid in Seville worth half the League title
Real Madrid gave the League an almost definitive blow with an impressive comeback against Sevilla (2-3). The Whites' visit to Sánchez-Pizjuán was marked in red as a key date in the fight for the title, and the clash did not disappoint. The people from Seville were superior in the first half, but in the second came the reaction of Ancelotti's men, with an extraordinary Rodrygo, and culminated in Benzema, who else, to give the Madridistas half a title.
Lopetegui made it clear from his line-up that nothing to speculate about, that he was going for the game. With Jordán and Rakitic as midfielders, the Basque coach put up four attacking players to threaten the opposing goal: Papu, Tecatito, Lamela, and Martial. Opposite, Ancelotti had to improvise, with Carvajal as an improvised left-back and Camavinga in the place of the suspended Casemiro.
The start was even, with two teams trying to push upfront and looking to dominate their rival. But it was Sevilla who left the best sensations on the field, and Martial gave the first warning with a shot on the half-turn that missed the post.
There were no clear chances, and individual errors decided the balance. A bad shot by Lucas Vázquez ended in a foul upfront and in it, Rakitic took advantage of Militao moving from his place at the barrier to open the scoring.
Just two minutes later, the Brazilian central defender was not lucky again. Acuña put it on Tecatito, the Mexican made trouble for a Militao who didn't know what to do and the ball came clearly to Lamela, who only had to push the ball into the net.
The white team was on the canvas, which then began to grow around the ball. No clear chances, apart from a loose shot and another offside by Benzema, but at least left the feeling that he hadn't given up yet.
The clash had, of course, its doses of controversy in the first part: the whites claimed a hand from Diego Carlos in the area –the VAR did not interpret it as punishable– and the Sevilla players requested the second card for a foul by Camavinga, already with yellow, to Martial, who ended up leaving the field injured.
Madrid came out with a different air after the break, aware that the result tightened the League too much for their interests. And he did it based on suffocating pressure up top and good football. Rodrygo came on for Camavinga and revolutionized the clash, providing overflow and arrival. Karim Benzema had it after a great pass from Luka Modric, but Bono won the game with a save.
The Madrid push soon had its reward in a great play by Vinícius and Carvajal that Rodrygo, coming from behind, pushed into the net. The clash was not over.
Sevilla was touched, unable to shake off the rival pressure. And Madrid prowled the goal almost in every action. A long shot from Militao met Bono, and a cross-shot from Benzema hit the post.
And at the insistence, the goal came... and more controversy. Vinícius controlled the area between the chest, the shoulder, and the arm, and shot it from him into the net. The referee annulled it, but the VAR called him to go see the play. Everything seemed to indicate that Cuadra Fernández was going to consider the goal valid... but he kept his decision to annul it after several long minutes.
The tie did not come then, but the goal was not long in coming. Carvajal took it from the front after a corner and Nacho, who had just entered the field, took a right hand against which Bono could do nothing.
Madrid smelled the blood against a Sevilla already asking for the time, bottomless. It was a great opportunity for the whites to sentence the League. And a play between Vinícius and Rodrygo was completed by Benzema to give the Whites half the League.
Atlético and Carrasco cling to the heroic to add a victory in discount against Espanyol
Atlético added an agonizing victory against Espanyol (2-1) in the last minute to continue maintaining their place in the Champions League. The mattress team did not show their best credentials at the start of the match against the parakeets.
The most alert on the pitch was Jan Oblak, the Slovenian goalkeeper who saved his team with a magnificent reflex stoppage after a shot with bad blood from the visiting center-back Cabrera. The minutes continued to pass and Simeone's men could not find the fluidity necessary to generate chances upfront, they could not make the Joao Félix-Correa duo work.
And, once again, the leading role fell back to Espanyol. Raúl de Tomas was about to surprise everyone with a cross that ended up going very close to Oblak's squad. A scare that put fear in Atleti's body and the ghosts of the match against Mallorca haunted him again. The only rojiblanco resource seemed to be the lateral centers, a choice that hardly affected the central parakeets, aware of their aerial power against the two rival forwards.
In the final stretch of the first half, Joao Félix stepped on the rival area and took a stomp from Sergi Gómez, an action that the attacker claimed as a penalty, but neither Figueroa Vázquez nor the VAR saw anything punishable. The break was reached with Lemar's injury, who left the field with tears in his eyes, and without goals.
In the second part, Atleti's approach radically changed. Simeone introduced three new players on the field: Griezmann, Cunha and Carrasco for the injured Lemar, Joao Félix and Vrsaljko. A facelift that worked perfectly.
Oblak did his thing again saving a goal sung to Darder and, immediately afterward, Carrasco did not forgive Diego López in the rival goal. The Belgian finished to perfection to put his team ahead by taking advantage of the first big red-and-white chance.
The joy lasted until the middle of the second half for the mattresses. An unfortunate action by Kondogbia, who touched the ball with his hand, ended with his expulsion. A decision highly protested by Simeone's men, who did not believe how the referee decided to get the second yellow card for the midfielder. The problem did not end there. De Tomás surprised Jan Oblak with the subsequent free-kick and ended up leveling the match.
The match became very uphill for the colchoneros, with 10 and with the electronic tie against a grown Espanyol after the goal.
Despite this, and after the carousel of changes from the two teams to adjust, Atleti did not give up on going up, and meanwhile, Espanyol waited on the counter to try to kill the match. However, everything changed in the last action. He touched De Tomás with his hand at the exit of a corner and, after reviewing it in the VAR by the referee, Carrasco took responsibility from eleven meters. The Belgian did not fail and gave Atlético a triumph of faith.
